Armenia is a compact country that makes day trips genuinely easy — most of the country’s most impressive sites are within 2–3 hours of Yerevan. Whether you want an organised tour with a guide or a self-arranged taxi for the day, most routes are reliable and well-covered. This page covers the main tour options, what each trip involves, and how to book.

Garni Temple & Geghard Monastery

The most visited day trip in Armenia, and rightly so. Garni Temple (28 km east of Yerevan) is the only standing Greco-Roman-style colonnaded temple in the former Soviet Union, built in the 1st century AD on a dramatic clifftop. A short drive up the same gorge brings you to Geghard Monastery — a UNESCO World Heritage site partially carved into the cliff face, with a main church, smaller cave chapels, and some of the finest khachkar carvings in the country.

  • Duration: Half day (4–5 hours) or full day with an additional stop
  • Best for: First-time visitors, history and architecture, photography
  • Common additions: Khor Virap or Noravank added on for a longer day

Lake Sevan Day Trip

Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucasus — a vast expanse of turquoise water at 1,900 metres above sea level, with the Sevanavank Monastery peninsula as the centrepiece. A half-day trip from Yerevan is enough to cover the monastery, walk the shoreline, and have lunch by the water. Combining it with a stop at Dilijan (30 minutes further north) or Charents Arch viewpoint adds depth to the route.

  • Duration: Half day to full day
  • Best for: Scenery, photography, history, combining with Dilijan
  • Best season: May–September for warm weather; possible year-round

Khor Virap Monastery

Khor Virap is 35 km south of Yerevan on the flat Ararat plain — a medieval monastery rising directly in front of Mount Ararat across the Turkish border. The combination of the monastery and the snow-capped peak behind it is one of the most powerful images in Armenia. The monastery is still active; inside, you can descend into the pit where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 13 years.

  • Duration: 2–3 hours from Yerevan (half day)
  • Best for: Photography, religious history, first impressions of Ararat
  • Best light: Morning (before cloud builds around the peak)
  • Common addition: Often combined with Noravank or Garni/Geghard for a full day

Tatev Monastery & Wings of Tatev Cable Car

Tatev is in the deep south of Armenia, roughly 250 km from Yerevan — too far for a comfortable day trip, but many visitors do it on a long day or as part of a 2–3 night southern circuit. The Wings of Tatev cable car (5.7 km, formerly the world’s longest reversible cable car) descends into the Vorotan gorge and delivers you to the monastery perched above. The 9th–13th century complex is one of the most architecturally complete in Armenia.

  • Duration: Full day from Yerevan (very long) or overnight trip
  • Best for: Architecture, gorge scenery, southern Armenia circuit

Noravank Monastery & Areni Wine Village

Noravank sits in a narrow red-rock canyon in the Vayots Dzor region, about 120 km south of Yerevan. The 13th-century monastery, with its distinctive two-storey church and external staircase, is one of the most photogenic in the country. Combining it with a stop at Areni village — where the indigenous Areni grape has been cultivated for thousands of years — makes a full and well-balanced day.

  • Duration: Full day
  • Best for: Architecture, photography, wine interest
  • Common additions: Khor Virap or Jermuk on the way

Areni Wine Country Tour

Armenia is one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world — the Areni-1 cave near Areni village contained the oldest known winemaking facility (c. 6,100 years old). Several small wineries in the Vayots Dzor region now offer tastings, tours, and direct sales. Most tours from Yerevan combine a winery visit with Noravank or Khor Virap.

  • Duration: Full day
  • Best for: Wine interest, food culture, Armenian history
  • Best season: September–October for harvest season

Yerevan City Tour

Yerevan is walkable enough that many visitors self-guide. But an organised city tour covers the history behind what you’re looking at — the significance of the tuff stone, the Soviet urban planning, the independence story, and the cultural institutions. Good options include:

  • Walking tours of the centre, Cascade, and Republic Square (typically 2–3 hours)
  • Brandy factory tour at the Ararat distillery (1.5 hours, with tasting)
  • Matenadaran guided tour (1–1.5 hours)
  • Combined city + Vernissage market tours on weekend mornings

How to Book Tours

Most tours in Armenia can be booked through:

  • GetYourGuide — the largest selection of English-language, vetted tours with upfront pricing and genuine reviews. Browse tours from Yerevan for the full list.
  • Local tour operators — many guesthouses and hotels can arrange private taxis or guide-accompanied tours at competitive rates
  • Direct taxi — for most day trips, a private taxi arranged the day before is cheaper than a packaged tour and gives you full control over timing. Agree on price and itinerary in advance.

Practical Notes

  • Group vs private: Group tours are cheaper but run to fixed schedules. Private tours or taxis let you linger where you want and skip what you don’t.
  • Guides: English-speaking guides add context but are an extra cost. For sites like Geghard and Tatev, a guide makes a significant difference to the experience.
  • What’s included: Always check whether entrance fees are included in the tour price. Most are not.
  • Tipping: For guides and private drivers, 1,000–3,000 AMD as a tip for a good day is standard and appreciated.
